JPTA (Japan Piano Technicians Association) will exhibit the Lyre Piano (in the possession of the Musical Instrument Museum of Musashino Academia Musicae) this year, which is famous for its elegant design like a noble woman.
In the beginning of the 19th century, Giraffe Pianos were manufactured for the purpose of saving the space. Giraffe Pianos looked like vertically erected grand pianos, but they were not well balanced. So in the 1820fs, they strung the pianos with 20 inclining to the right and succeeded in giving a birth to Lyre Piano. Lyre Pianos were loved among the higher classes because of their gracefulness.
Lyre-shaped musical instruments like guitars and mandolins were also manufactured a lot in those days.
This Lyre Piano has been made so beautifully. It has a soundboard in the front, and is covered by decorative cloth instead of plank, so it has refined and beautiful sound.
Since action is not over-damper but is independent, it has an una corda system.
Please come and visit our Musical Instruments Fair which will be held in Minato Mirai, Yokohama this fall.
